Welcome to KT Aboriginal Fine Art!
KT Aboriginal Fine Art is an Australian Family Owned & Operated Art business, founded in 2019 by Aboriginal Artists, mother & daughter duo, Kelly Taylor & T’keyah Ware.
In 2016 Inspired by mum and sister’s art and journey T’keyah’s second oldest sister Kelilah joined the family business introducing her unique abstract style of dot work that is shaped into waves and lines.
In 2019 T’keyah’s oldest sister also joined the family business introducing her style of dot work that is shaped into circles.
Kelly says, “My nana Millie was my teacher, she always encouraged me to paint and passed many ancient stories down along the way, following her example I passed down what I learnt to my three daughters,” Taylor, who has been painting on and off for 29 years, recalls of her grandmother. “T’keyah was the only one that did take what she learnt on board in 2019; she started to paint and before we knew it, she was creating some amazing paintings. I taught my daughter the stories and techniques of mixing colours and the importance of respecting our Aboriginal culture when choosing a storyline before dot painting.”
When creating these beautiful pieces, the family explains they mix colours to suit a story and design but keep their symbols traditional. Kelly says “Our dot painting style we call creeper dots, [which] we blend and overlap colours to bring out the beauty eye-catching effect of ancient art merging with traditional and contemporary art.”
Sharing their family’s stories and continuing this tradition for years to come is their priority, and that the paintings themselves are rooted in their shared history, and the history of their late grandmother and great-grandmother Millie Taylor (nee-Lennon-dec).
Kelly says, “I’ve learnt a lot about my culture, Aboriginal art and how important it is for me to know more about my culture, storyline and family,” T’keyah says of the process of painting with her mother, noting she loves to base her painting around her maternal family’s stories and country, though the artist flags she from a family of strong traditional backgrounds on both sides. T’keyah says “I have learnt how to design paintings using the correct traditional symbols and mum is still teaching me more and more things I need to know about my culture. I will continue to learn from my mum until it’s my time to teach.”
Kelilah & Taliyah says, “before we start a painting, we like to sit with our mum so she can show us how and where to paint certain symbols, then we talk about the painting storyline, title and how the painting will look once its completed, sometimes it’s hard because we don’t know where to start but mum is very supportive and helps us by painting together”.
Trevor Ware is Kelly’s partner, who also helps with the family business with customer communication, sale enquires, management and preparation for upcoming projects and exhibitions, so his partner and daughter’s can focus on designing and painting.
This artistic family have already earned themselves a number of accolades and moments of recognition. From features in notable publications such as Vogue Living, to daughter T’keyah Ware winning an award as “Highly Commended” that was presented to her during the Our Young Mob Exhibition at the Adelaide Festival, to Kelilah Taylor-Ware winning the Abstract Award in 2020 Bluethumb Art Prize, family collaboration “From Our Family to Yours” with Disney and Bluethumb, their work, steeped in history and knowledge passed down through the family’s generations, is undeniably special.
The family are passionate about painting pieces that signify their own personal stories and unique journeys and love to share their interpretations of country.
Today the family business is growing, and this amazing family continue to grow as they produce more beautiful fine arts, along with amazing new products to sell through their online shop at KT Aboriginal Fine Art.
